Palestinian American Hoists US Flag During Settler Siege in West Bank

Louai Abu Ridi, a Palestinian American from Ohio, has raised the United States flag on his home in the village of Qusra to appeal for government intervention. His residence is one of three houses in the northern West Bank that have been besieged by Israeli settlers for over a week. According to reports, the settlers trapped residents inside and blocked the delivery of food and other supplies.

Under pressure from the United States, the Israeli military previously ordered the removal of the settlers, dismantled tents, and detained one individual. However, settlers have since returned to the area by foot and by vehicle. Abu Ridi stated that Israeli security forces have remained positioned outside and have failed to stop settlers from entering his property, noting that soldiers appeared friendly with the settlers.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, an evangelical pastor who has historically supported settlers, condemned the siege and called for the protection of US citizens. In an interview with Israeli television, Huckabee described the actions of the minority of settlers involved as terrorist activity and stated that Palestinian families have the right to live without fear.

Both reports note that violence by settlers has increased since October 7, 2023, often with the goal of seizing Palestinian property. The current right wing government under Benjamin Netanyahu has supported the expansion of settlements in the region. International law considers these settlements illegal, as the Geneva Convention prohibits an occupying power from transferring its population into occupied territory. Data from Peace Now indicates that approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers live among 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank.
