Parliamentary Discord Continues Over Demand for Home Minister's Statement on Student Protests

Opposition parties in Parliament are demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding alleged police brutality and the use of pellet guns against students during protests on July 20. The standoff has led to disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for two consecutive weeks. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge has held the Home Minister responsible for the alleged excesses, stating that people's power will eventually hold him accountable.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has strongly defended the Home Minister, asserting that Shah is in Parliament from early morning until late night. Rijiju stated that the Opposition cannot dictate which minister provides a reply and claimed that Shah's name makes terrorists and extremists tremble in fear. Regarding the Rajya Sabha, Rijiju clarified that the Chairman's request to convey the sentiments of the Opposition to the Home Minister was an observation rather than a formal direction.

While some Opposition leaders, such as Trinamool Congress's Derek O'Brien, insist that a statement from Shah must come before any other business, other members of the Opposition expressed a desire to debate pending legislation. This includes the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, which allows the government to take over assets of NGOs whose licenses are cancelled. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha cleared the MSME development bill amid the ongoing din.
