The part-time employment quota in Germany reached a record high of over 40 percent in the second quarter. According to data from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, the number of part-time employees increased by 0.5 percent to 16.9 million compared to the same quarter last year. During the same period, the number of full-time employees decreased by 0.9 percent to 25.1 million. The total number of employed persons fell by 0.5 percent to 45.688 million.
The IAB attributes this shift to employment growth in sectors with high part-time ratios, such as education, teaching, and the health and social services sectors. Conversely, employment declined in industries with high full-time ratios, such as the industrial sector. Full-time employees worked an average of 38.32 hours per week, which remained constant. Part-time employees worked an average of 18.88 hours per week, representing a slight increase over the previous year.
