A power failure in the overhead network of CPTM Line 12-Safira caused significant disruptions on Tuesday morning in the east zone of São Paulo. The incident, identified at 6:53 a.m. between Calmon Viana and Itaim Paulista stations, forced passengers on a train heading toward Brás to evacuate and walk along the tracks between Jardim Romano and Itaim Paulista to reach another train.
CPTM reported that trains are currently operating on a single track between Calmon Viana and Itaim Paulista while maintenance teams work to resolve the issue. This has resulted in reduced speeds and increased intervals between trains, with some users reporting wait times of up to 20 minutes. No timeline for the normalization of service has been provided. To assist affected commuters, the Paese free bus service was deployed between Itaim Paulista and Calmon Viana.
This failure follows a civil inquiry opened in July by the Public Ministry of São Paulo. The investigation is examining operational failures on lines 11-Coral, 12-Safira, and 13-Jade that occurred after the concessionaire Trivia Trens began operations on July 21. According to the inquiry, more than seven serious operational failures were recorded within the first three days of management. These events led the government of Tarcísio de Freitas to temporarily return management of the lines to CPTM.
