Pelé scored the first of his 1,283 career goals on September 7, 1956, during a friendly match between Santos and Corinthians de Santo André. The 15 year old player entered the game in the second half and scored the sixth goal in a 7 to 1 victory at the Américo Guazzeli stadium. The match was played for the Troféu Independência, a trophy commemorating Brazil's independence from Portugal.
At the time, Pelé was often called Gasolina and was known for his polite demeanor toward older teammates and staff. Experienced players frequently asked the teenager to perform errands, such as buying cigarettes, while he worked to improve his left foot. Although the goal was initially credited to another player named Raimundinho, the record was corrected 13 years later by official Nelson Cerchiari.
Pelé became a key part of the Santos squad in 1957 and joined the national team in 1958. While it is widely believed that the French magazine Paris Match first crowned him the King after the 1958 World Cup, writer Ruy Castro and dramatist Nelson Rodrigues noted that his royal status was recognized earlier in 1958 following a match against America of Rio de Janeiro.
