Persisting Questions and Psychological Analysis of 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

Twenty five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, various conspiracy theories continue to challenge the official accounts of the events. These theories include claims that the collapse of the World Trade Center towers was the result of controlled demolitions rather than plane impacts and fires, as well as suspicions regarding the attack on the Pentagon and the death of Osama bin Laden. While the National Institute of Standards and Technology concluded that heat weakened the steel columns to cause the collapse, skeptics argue that fires alone could not have destroyed the buildings with such speed and precision. Some theories further suggest the attacks were an inside job orchestrated by the US government to justify foreign interventions. Professor Neil Dagnall of Manchester Metropolitan University notes that researching the psychology of conspiracy theories is complicated because it often relies on self report data, which is subjective and open to bias. To obtain more objective readings, psychologists may use behavioral observations such as heart rate variability or skin conductance.
