Philippine Poverty Rate Hits Record Low Amid Debate Over Measurement Accuracy

Poverty incidence among individuals in the Philippines fell to 9.7 percent in 2025, down from 18.1 percent in 2021, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Poverty among families dropped to 6.4 percent, marking the first time this figure has fallen into single digits. While Economy Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon testified that a revised threshold accounting for age, sex, and household size is planned, the 2023 methodology remains in force pending PSA Board approval.
