Philippines Sets Ambitious Eight Gold Medal Target for Aichi Nagoya Asian Games

Team Philippines aims to win at least eight gold medals at the upcoming Aichi Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan, a goal that would double the country's previous best of four golds achieved in 2018 and 2023. Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino announced the target during a send off event on September 10 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. The delegation consists of approximately 447 to 464 athletes competing across 34 sporting disciplines. To motivate the team, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio announced an additional 6,000 peso allowance for each athlete and coach, along with promised bonuses if the country exceeds its previous medal tallies.

Boxer Aira Villegas and weightlifter Albert Ian delos Santos have been named as the flag bearers for the opening ceremony on September 19 at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium. For the ceremony, athletes will wear the Malaya Barong designed by Francis Libiran, which features the colors of the Philippine flag, piña jusi, and Kalinga inspired patterns. While the official opening is next week, the men's basketball tournament has already begun with Gilas Pilipinas facing Bahrain on September 11.

Key medal prospects include Carlos Yulo, Alex Eala, and returning champions from the 2023 games. Wushu athlete Agatha Wong, a six time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, expressed her determination to secure a gold medal in this edition.
