PM Lawrence Wong Announces Major Review of Family Support Measures

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on August 8 that the government is conducting a major review of how it supports Singaporean families throughout their lives. In his National Day Message, the Prime Minister stated that the government is taking a fresh look at the costs of raising children, access to affordable infant care and childcare, and other methods to lighten the load on families. He noted that this review extends beyond the points of marriage and parenthood to cover various life stages. Further details regarding these plans will be shared during the National Day Rally on August 23.

Mr. Wong acknowledged that families in Singapore and globally are under strain due to rising expectations for children and the challenge of caring for aging parents while balancing work. One report noted that this review is being driven by an inter-ministry Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup established in April amid a record low total fertility rate.

Addressing the broader global context, the Prime Minister described an uncertain environment marked by trade barriers, weakened trust between nations, and volatility in the Middle East. He said these factors have contributed to higher energy prices and disrupted supply chains. Despite these challenges, he stated that Singapore's economy remained resilient with robust growth in the first half of the year and a stable labor market.

Mr. Wong also discussed the role of technology. He mentioned that while social media helps people stay connected, the government will implement stronger safeguards to protect children from its negative effects on mental well-being. He added that Singapore will adopt artificial intelligence to increase productivity and create better jobs, paired with investments in skills and training for workers.
