PM Modi and President Xi Jinping Discuss Bilateral Ties at BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit to discuss the future of India China relations. During the bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that both nations should be guided by the three mutuals: mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that Modi underlined the need for both sides to show sensitivity to each other's core concerns.

The meeting occurred amid efforts to normalize ties following a border agreement in October 2024, though reports of fresh tensions between troops in the Taksing region of Arunachal Pradesh provided a backdrop to the talks. Modi asserted that peace and tranquillity in border areas remain an essential basis for the continued development of bilateral relations. The two leaders expressed a commitment to a fair and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.

The Chinese readout stated that India reiterated its stances on Taiwan and Tibet and promised not to allow anti China activities on its territory. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal acknowledged that these issues were discussed but focused on the Prime Minister's emphasis on Indian concerns. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted that the leaders reached an important consensus that the two countries should be partners.
