Thousands of students and job aspirants clashed with police in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on Monday, August 10, during a march to the state assembly to protest alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. Police used water cannons, tear gas, batons, and lathi charges to disperse the crowd after protesters breached multiple layers of police barricades. Several protesters reported injuries to their heads and limbs, while police officials stated that force was used only after a section of the crowd became violent and pelted stones. The protests, which began on July 25, center on allegations of fraud and paper leaks in exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Protesters are demanding a comprehensive overhaul of the examination system, the cancellation of several tests, and an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). While the state government agreed to cancel three examinations, including the 14th JPSC preliminary exam, and accepted an Enforcement Directorate probe into financial irregularities, students continue to demand the cancellation of the Combined Graduate Level examination and a federal CBI probe.
In a significant development, the Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department arrested L Khiangte, the former chairperson of the JPSC, in connection with the alleged irregularities. Khiangte had resigned from his post on July 22. Meanwhile, political tensions rose as the BJP, the main opposition party, detained former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and other leaders who were protesting outside the Chief Minister's residence. Within the assembly, government ministers accused the BJP of hijacking the student agitation, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the use of force and called for dialogue.
The unrest in Jharkhand follows similar youth led protests in New Delhi, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, which led to the resignation of the national education minister in July. Observers note that these movements reflect a broader frustration among young Indians regarding limited public sector employment and the integrity of the education system.
