A police officer in Jeju has been placed under emergency arrest on suspicion of closing missing person cases without confirming the safety of the individuals. The officer was detained without a warrant on charges including dereliction of duty, falsifying official electronic records, and obstruction of official duties through deceptive means.

In a second case involving 37 year old Jang Mi ran, who has been missing for over three months, the officer is suspected of arbitrarily closing the file after telling the family she was safe. While the officer claimed he spoke with Jang, an investigation found no call records between them. A full scale search for Jang involving the police and Coast Guard began on Thursday.
