Police Officers Attacked During Anti-Migrant Protests in Portsmouth and Dover

Seven police officers were assaulted and multiple police vehicles were damaged during an anti-migrant protest in Portsmouth. The incident occurred after a small boat carrying 140 asylum seekers was intercepted off the coast on Sunday. Masked protesters attempted to prevent the migrants from being transported away from the port. This event followed similar actions in Dover where masked vigilantes blockaded roads and disrupted ferry traffic for several hours.

The protests were linked to a group called the Patriot Platform, led by Daniel Thomas, an associate of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who is better known as Tommy Robinson. According to reports, the demonstrators were primarily dressed in black and wore masks. While the Home Office condemned the behavior as thuggish and intimidating, government officials admitted that security services were surprised by the events. Parliamentary Under-Secretary Sarah Jones stated that police had not foreseen or been able to prevent the actions of the masked individuals.

Government responses to the lack of preparation varied. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden stated that the responsibility for police being unprepared lies with the protest organizers if they planned the events covertly. Meanwhile, the government suggested that police might implement a ban on face coverings for future anti-migrant demonstrations to better identify violent offenders. Prime Minister Andrew Burnham emphasized that the UK would not accept outbreaks of racism and urged that fear be met with optimism and hope.
