Political Tension Mounts Following Police Crackdown on Student Protesters in Jharkhand

Thousands of students and job aspirants in Jharkhand clashed with police on Monday during a march to the state Assembly in Ranchi. Protesters, who are demonstrating against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), were met with tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charges. Several protesters were injured, and student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who was on a nine day hunger strike, was hospitalized after the police action. The protesters are demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the exams and the cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level examination.

On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a statewide bandh to protest the police action. During this period, approximately 110 workers from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, were detained after clashing with police during a march to the Assembly. Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that the government respects the right to protest and will address demands with sensitivity, but he accused the BJP of trying to mislead students for political gain. Conversely, BJP leaders and NDA members of Parliament have condemned the brutality, with some targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his perceived silence on the matter.

Outside of Jharkhand, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke criticized the crackdown, comparing it to previous police actions against students in Delhi. In Parliament, the issue became a flashpoint between the ruling NDA and the Opposition. NDA MPs staged a counter protest, alleging that the Opposition was avoiding a formal discussion in the House regarding the police action. Meanwhile, the AISA president Neha Bora described the issue of paper leaks as a systemic problem that cannot be solved solely through stricter punishments.
