PP and Vox Leaders to Join Protests Over Ceuta Crisis

Alberto Núñez Feijóo of the PP and Santiago Abascal of Vox will participate in a protest in front of the Madrid City Council on September 2 in response to the crisis in Ceuta. The mobilization was originally called by the citizen association Por Ceuta, Unidos por España, and later supported by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. While the PP has described the event as a non partisan gathering open to all Spaniards, the organizers have insisted that the march should remain free of political flags and signs.

Government officials in Madrid notified the City Council that the concentration in Plaza de Cibeles was prohibited because the Council lacks the legitimacy to authorize meetings under the right of assembly. This led to a public exchange on social media, with Feijóo stating that the government is afraid of Spain speaking and Isabel Díaz Ayuso challenging the government regarding the use of riot police. The government delegate denied that any concentration in support of Ceuta had been prohibited.

Reporting on the event differs by political perspective. A center left source frames the event as the far right calling for a protest against a traitor government. A center right source frames the event as political parties attempting to capitalize on the crisis to attack Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, while noting that the organizers sought to distance the event from political instrumentation.
