Prashant Kishor Wins Bankipur Bypoll as BJP Faces Setback in Bihar

Prashant Kishor of the Jan Suraaj Party won the Bankipur Assembly bypoll on Monday, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,324 votes. Kishor received 64,151 votes, while Sinha polled 44,827 and RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,273. The victory is considered a major setback for the BJP, which had held the urban constituency since 1995. The seat became vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Following his win, Kishor stated that the result was a message to the BJP and NDA leadership to replace Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. He argued that voters rejected Choudhary's leadership and urged the appointment of a more capable and virtuous person to shift the political focus toward education, employment, and migration. Nitin Nabin described the result as unexpected and stated that the BJP would conduct a thorough introspection.

On Tuesday, former Bihar Chief Minister and current Rajya Sabha MP Nitish Kumar met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the meeting occurred a day after the BJP loss, a senior JD(U) leader stated that the Bankipur result was not discussed; instead, the conversation focused on development projects in the state.

External reactions to the win varied. Gitanjali Angmo, wife of Sonam Wangchuk, questioned on social media if the tide was turning against the Modi government. Center right reporting focused heavily on Kishor's specific demands for a change in leadership and the electoral data, while center left reporting emphasized the diplomatic meeting between Nitish Kumar and the Prime Minister in the wake of the defeat.
