President De la Espriella Announces Aid for Tolima Fires and Updates Earthquake Toll

President Abelardo de la Espriella delivered a national address on August 30 to provide updates on the damages caused by a recent earthquake and ongoing fires in Tolima. Regarding the earthquake, the updated toll includes 331 deaths, 4,497 injuries, and 152 missing persons. Infrastructure damage includes 4,261 educational centers, 404 health centers, 121 aqueducts, 89 bridges, and 482 roads. In Tolima, fires have affected 23 municipalities and approximately 500 to 600 veredas, resulting in estimated losses of 134 billion Colombian pesos. Over 50,000 hectares have been affected, including 28,000 hectares of agricultural land, leaving 163,000 animals at risk of hunger or death. To address the crisis, the government announced a recovery plan that includes 65 million Colombian pesos in subsidies for home reconstruction, 5,000 tons of hay, 5,000 tons of rice husks for animal feed, and 7 billion Colombian pesos for productive projects. Additionally, the president promised a three month freeze on agricultural debt payments for affected farmers and increased health surveillance for respiratory illnesses. While the president attributed the fires to criminal activity, a center left source noted that scientists point to other factors such as the expansion of agricultural zones and decreased landscape connectivity. Center right sources focused primarily on the statistical balance of damages and the active status of fires in regions like Armero.
