President De la Espriella Coordinates Earthquake Recovery and Security Measures

President Abelardo de la Espriella will meet with Colombian business leaders and guild directors in Quibdó, Chocó, on September 7 to coordinate support and economic reactivation following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on August 10. The meeting follows a preliminary session in Barranquilla where the president secured agreements from leaders of Grupo Aval, Banco GNB Sudameris, and Grupo Bolívar to reduce housing credit rates to 8 percent effective annual for earthquake victims. De la Espriella has also announced a 30 trillion peso reconstruction fund called Fondo Milagro and a three month economic subsidy of 875,452 Colombian pesos for affected families. In a separate effort to garner support for the region, the Governor of Chocó released a video requesting aid in five languages, including English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Beyond disaster recovery, the president has focused on national security through a hardline approach. This has included military operations and public appearances where he has walked among the bodies of deceased suspected criminals. While some analysts suggest this approach appeals to voters desiring an end to criminality, others criticize the use of death as a trophy. The administration has also faced judicial scrutiny after a bombing in Guaviare killed three minors, leading a Bogotá judge to order the military to avoid aerial operations where children are present. The president's first month in office has been marked by a shift away from previous dialogue tables with criminal groups in favor of increased cooperation with United States intelligence.
