President Lula Faces Scrutiny Over Denied Relationship With Investigated Lobbyist

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has denied knowing lobbyist Roberta Luchsinger, despite the existence of at least 12 photographs showing the two together. During an interview with Jornal Nacional, Lula stated he had never seen or spoken to the businesswoman. In response, the president's campaign clarified that as a public figure, he is frequently photographed with many people and that such images do not prove a personal or professional relationship. However, Luchsinger has previously claimed in dialogues that she had a close relationship with the president and a partnership with his eldest son, Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, known as Lulinha.

Luchsinger and Lulinha are currently under investigation in three Federal Police inquiries involving suspected influence peddling. The investigations explore allegations that they attempted to favor companies with federal agencies, including a scheme to sell canabidiol medications to the Ministry of Health and business dealings with the state company Dataprev. Luchsinger has denied paying Lulinha for government access, describing their relationship as a friendship that predates Lula's presidency. Lulinha has been defended by the president, who characterized the suspicions as based on interpretations of phone calls.

Political reactions to the president's handling of the situation vary. Center-left reporting highlights internal concern within the PT party, where some view Luchsinger as a volatile figure. These reports note a perceived inconsistency in Lula's strategy, as he publicly distanced himself from Luchsinger and former chief of staff Marco Aurélio Santana while continuing to defend his son and ally Jaques Wagner.
