President of I Do Not Accept Corruption Institute Warns of Credibility Crisis in Brazil's Supreme Court

Roberto Livianu, the president of the I Do Not Accept Corruption Institute (Inac) and a Justice Prosecutor of Sao Paulo, has stated that Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) is experiencing an unprecedented moral and credibility crisis. This assessment follows recent internal conflicts within the court. According to reports, Minister Alexandre de Moraes accused Minister Andre Mendonca of administrative improbability, abuse of authority, and crimes of responsibility. This occurred after Mendonca ordered the lifting of secrecy on messages between Moraes and former banker Daniel Vorcaro regarding the Master Bank scandal. In response to the turmoil, STF President Edson Fachin removed the case from a fake news inquiry and granted the involved parties five days to respond.

Livianu has proposed several reforms to address the crisis, including the adoption of a code of ethics for higher courts and the implementation of term limits for magistrates to prevent decades long tenures. He also suggested using a triple list for the selection of the Prosecutor General of the Republic to reduce political influence. Additionally, Livianu called for the lifting of secrecy in other investigations, such as the Dark Horse film case and INSS retiree discount cases, to avoid the appearance of selectivity. He expressed concern that the court's current movements could impact upcoming elections.
