A presidential official announced Thursday that the decision to proceed with the appointments of the justice and gender equality ministers will be made following their confirmation hearings. Seong Ghi-hong, the senior presidential secretary for public relations and communication, discussed the status of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won and Gender Equality Minister nominee Yong Hye-in during an interview on MBC radio.
Both nominees were selected by President Lee Jae Myung during a Cabinet reshuffle late last month. Kim has faced criticism over allegations that he illegally lobbied the food and drug safety ministry in 2021 to secure approval for a COVID-19 treatment. Seong stated that the presidential office likely noted this during vetting because Kim, a two-term lawmaker, had previously been investigated by prosecutors and received a non-indictment decision. Yong has been criticized for her refusal to relinquish her proportional representation seat in the National Assembly.
Seong said the government intends to make a decision from the standpoint of the people after the formal question and answer process. Additionally, Seong addressed reports regarding a United States request for South Korea to deploy troops to the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that no final decision has been made and that options for contributing to the normalization of the strait could include technical assistance in addition to troop deployment.
