Prime Minister Andy Burnham cancels engagements following death of father

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has cancelled all official engagements for Monday and Tuesday following the death of his father, Roy Burnham. The Prime Minister had been scheduled to host business leaders at Downing Street on Monday and speak at the annual TUC Congress in Brighton on Tuesday.

Roy Burnham, a former telephone engineer, had been living in a care home while suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Burnham has previously stated that his father's illness was so advanced that he was unaware his son had become prime minister. In an interview with The Times, the Prime Minister described this as a sadness but noted that his father's life was part of a whole family achievement. He later shared a story of care home staff showing his father footage of him entering Downing Street, which he called a wonderful moment.

Drawing on his father's experience, the Prime Minister has made the reform of the adult social care system a priority. He has described the current system in England as broken and has advocated for better pay for care workers, whom he praised for their skill and professionalism.

In his 2024 book, Look North, co-written with Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram, Mr. Burnham wrote about his upbringing in Culcheth, Cheshire, with his parents, Roy and Eileen. He noted that while neither parent attended university, they were determined that their three sons should do so, providing a home full of love and support.

Condolences have been offered by various political figures. Communities Secretary Angela Rayner expressed her thoughts with the family, and opposition leaders including Kemi Badenoch, Sir Ed Davey, and Zack Polanski sent their sympathies.
