Prime Minister Takaichi Plans Cabinet and LDP Executive Reshuffle for September 16

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is arranging to reshuffle her Cabinet and the executive lineup of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party as early as September 16. The move is intended to prepare the administration for an extraordinary parliamentary session planned for early October. Takaichi is expected to seek authorization for the new party lineup at an executive committee meeting on September 15, with appointments for senior vice ministers and parliamentary vice ministers following between September 16 and 18.

The reshuffle is expected to occur after the Cabinet approves a tax reform package that would reduce the consumption tax on food and beverages from 8 percent to 1 percent for two years starting next April. If this approval is delayed, the appointments may be postponed until after the Prime Minister attends the U.N. General Assembly later in the month.

Several key figures are expected to remain in their roles to ensure continuity. These include Secretary General Shunichi Suzuki, Vice President Taro Aso, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Toru Kihara. Additionally, Takaichi is expected to retain Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama to pursue expansionary fiscal policies. Reports also indicate that Takaichi may appoint LDP policy chief Takayuki Kobayashi to a key position.

On September 7, Prime Minister Takaichi held a meeting with Secretary General Suzuki to discuss the personnel arrangements. Earlier that day, she had lunch with LDP executives Takayuki Kobayashi and Koichi Hagiuda, as well as Chief Cabinet Secretary Toru Kihara, to discuss party management and organizational strengthening.
