Prince Hisahito, who is second in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, turned 20 on Sunday. The nephew of Emperor Naruhito is currently a second year student at the University of Tsukuba, where he studies biology. While he reached adulthood in September 2024, his official coming of age ceremonies were postponed by one year to ensure they did not interfere with his university entrance exam preparations.
Over the past year, the prince has engaged in several official duties and firsts. He attended the New Year's Greeting and the New Year's Poetry Reading for the first time. In May, he debuted at a state banquet for Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. where he spoke with the guest in English. His public engagements also included a visit to the Cenotaph for the A bomb Victims in Hiroshima and attendance at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Deaflympics, where he used sign language to interact with athletes.
According to the Imperial Household Agency, the prince has renewed his commitment to his responsibilities as an adult member of the imperial family. He maintains a residence in Tsukuba near his university but returns to the Akasaka Estate in Tokyo, where he spends time cultivating vegetables and rice.
