Protests and Arrests Mount Over Jharkhand Recruitment Irregularities

The Jharkhand government has arrested 19 people in connection with alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) examinations. The most recent wave of arrests includes four job aspirants who allegedly acted as agents for a syndicate and a computer operator who worked for a former JPSC chairman. These developments come as protests and an indefinite hunger strike continue in Ranchi, marking 12 days of student agitation.

The controversy centers on the 14th Combined Civil Services Examination, where 2,204 candidates were shortlisted for the Main examination against 103 vacancies. Protesters allege that papers were leaked and the recruitment process was compromised. In response, the JPSC postponed the Combined Civil Services Mains Examination, which was originally scheduled for late July, citing unavoidable circumstances. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has questioned the former JPSC chairman four times since July 28.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren has stated that the government stands with the youth and is awaiting the CID investigation report to determine further action. State officials have invited a delegation of protesters for discussions at the Chief Minister's residence. The government is expected to form a committee of ministers and bureaucrats to address demands, which include handing the probe over to the CBI, cancelling exams conducted by TSR Data Processing Private Limited, and implementing systematic reforms.

The movement has gained significant momentum, evolving from a small gathering at Bapu Vatika on June 25 into a wider student movement supported by civil society and various political groups. Some protesters, including a PhD holder and a leader of the Jharkhand Krantikari Loktantrik Morcha, have engaged in hunger strikes to demand justice and transparency in the appointment process.
