A Qantas Airways flight traveling from Queenstown, New Zealand, to Sydney, Australia, was diverted to Christchurch on Saturday afternoon after one of the aircraft's engines caught fire. Passengers on flight QF122 reported hearing a bang and seeing flames issuing from the left engine in rapid bursts, which caused some passengers to scream and cabin lights to flicker. The Boeing 737 landed safely in Christchurch approximately 52 minutes after takeoff, where emergency services were waiting on the tarmac.
Qantas stated that the aircraft suffered an engine issue and that pilots are highly trained to manage such situations. Two engineers were sent to Christchurch on Sunday to investigate the cause of the incident. While both engines are thought to have remained in operation for the duration of the flight, the airline provided affected passengers with hotel accommodations and complimentary flights to Sydney on Sunday.
One passenger, Liza-Jayne Loch, described the experience as traumatic and noted that she cried upon finally landing in Sydney. She praised the cabin crew for remaining calming during the emergency.
