Former England footballer Raheem Sterling has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possession of a Class C drug following a car crash in May. Appearing at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court, the 31 year old admitted to driving a Lamborghini Urus dangerously on the M25, the M3, the A327, and Minley Road before crashing into a metal gate in a layby. Sterling also admitted to possessing six canisters of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary stated that the incident was a single vehicle collision near the Minley interchange on May 28. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. One witness described seeing the driver inhaling from a white balloon and characterized the driving as absolutely horrendous as the vehicle swerved between lanes.
Sterling is currently without a club. He most recently played for the Dutch side Feyenoord after a period with Chelsea and a loan spell at Arsenal. During his career, he earned 82 caps for England and won four Premier League titles with Manchester City. In 2021, he was awarded an MBE for services to racial equality in sport. Sterling has been disqualified from driving in the interim and is scheduled to appear in court again on November 25.
