- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

The Reserve Bank of India has rejected an application by Tata Sons to surrender its registration as a non-banking financial company (NBFC). Tata Sons filed the request in March 2024 after repaying more than 21,000 crore rupees of debt in an effort to strengthen its balance sheet and remain privately held. The central bank stated that the company did not meet the required criteria for deregistration.
Tata Sons is classified as an Upper Layer NBFC, a category that faces stricter regulations and a requirement to list on stock exchanges. Under the RBI's scale based regulatory system introduced after a 2018 shadow lender collapse, companies with assets above 1 lakh crore rupees automatically fall into this category. The original deadline for Tata Sons to list was September 2025, but the rejection of its deregistration application makes a public listing increasingly difficult to avoid.
Tata Trusts owns approximately 66 percent of Tata Sons. Reports indicate that Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata has opposed a public listing because it could reduce the Trusts' control over the holding company and increase scrutiny of internal dealings. This has created a point of contention between Noel Tata and Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran.
While a center leaning source focuses on the implications for shareholders following a potential listing, a center right leaning source frames the event as an increase in pressure on Noel Tata and a challenge to the group's leadership structure.
