Recovery operations continue in Kumamoto Prefecture following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck on July 28. Two weeks after the event, over 6,000 people remain in evacuation centers, and the local government is preparing to move these evacuees into hotels. In response to the disaster, U.S. Forces Japan airlifted approximately 16 tons of drinking water and other relief supplies from Yokota Air Base to the Self-Defense Forces' Vice-Camp Takayubaru. U.S. Ambassador George Glass visited the prefecture to confirm the handover of supplies and meet with Governor Takashi Kimura, stating that the United States responded to a request from its closest friend and ally.

Infrastructure recovery is also progressing, with Kumamoto Castle expected to reopen on August 13. The castle had been closed after the earthquake caused collapses at 40 locations, including stone walls.
