Regional Powers and US Diplomats Warn of Severe Risks Regarding Taiwan Conflict

The risk of conflict over Taiwan is driving significant military and diplomatic shifts across the Indo Pacific. Raymond Greene, the director of the American Institute in Taiwan, warned that a conflict across the Taiwan Strait would have a larger impact on the global economy than World War II. Greene stated that the United States is supporting Taiwan's efforts to enhance its own defense capabilities and is reinforcing its presence in the Asia Pacific to maintain a favorable regional balance of power. This comes as the administration of Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te increases defense spending, with next year's budget expected to exceed 1 trillion Taiwan dollars for the first time.

Simultaneously, Japan is accelerating its own military preparations to deter and sustain a potential conflict. Tokyo is planning a new defense hub in Kure, Hiroshima prefecture, which will combine military facilities, logistics, and defense production. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has described a Taiwan contingency involving the use of force as a survival threatening situation for Japan. This shift in planning reflects the strategic importance of Taiwan's location along vital Japanese sea lines of communication and its proximity to key US military installations.
