Renewed Fighting in Yemen Displaces Over 100,000 People

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that more than 100,000 people have been internally displaced following a surge in fighting in western Yemen. Thousands of others have fled by sea to Djibouti, with Djiboutian authorities reporting that over 3,400 people arrived within a 48 hour period. The displacement follows a Houthi offensive along the Red Sea coast, during which the group seized the port city of Mocha and the strategic island of Mayyun. These advances have given the Houthis control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical global shipping corridor.

Humanitarian agencies warn that the escalation is straining resources in Djibouti and hindering aid delivery within Yemen. The UNHCR notes that insecurity, damaged roads, and movement restrictions are obstructing operations. There are concerns that the instability in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait could force commercial and humanitarian shipping to divert around the Cape of Good Hope, which would add 25 to 30 days to transit times and increase costs. The UNHCR has requested 14 million dollars in immediate international funding to address the crisis.
