Renowned Mountaineer Nirmal Purja and Nine Others Killed in Pakistan Avalanche

Renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja and nine companions died in an avalanche on Thursday during an ascent of Broad Peak in Pakistan. The mountain, which stands at 8,051 meters, is the 12th highest in the world. The expedition company, Elite Exped, confirmed the deaths on Saturday. The group consisted of ten climbers, including six Nepalis and one person each from China, Oman, Pakistan, and the United States. Search crews recovered three bodies on Friday, while others were identified via drone footage but remain in difficult locations that hinder retrieval. Officials noted that Pakistan does not utilize the long line helicopter rescue practices common in Nepal.

Purja, 43, was a former member of the British Army and special forces who served as a Gurkha. He gained international fame after climbing all 14 of the world's peaks above 8,000 meters in six months in 2019, a feat documented in the Netflix film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. He was awarded an MBE by the late Queen in 2018 for his achievements. At the time of his death, he was reportedly planning a new record to climb all 8,000 meter peaks without oxygen.

Tributes for Purja came from various global leaders and figures. Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed that the history of the climbers' courage would remain inspiring. UK Defense Minister Wes Streeting and Prince William both shared their sorrow, with the Prince of Wales describing Purja as one of the world's greatest mountaineers. Bear Grylls and Spencer Matthews also posted tributes on social media. While most reports focused on his professional legacy and military service, center lean outlets emphasized his role as an industry giant who inspired a generation, whereas center left outlets highlighted his drive and the celebrity status he achieved through Netflix.
