Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Faces Debate Over Representation in New Florida District

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is seeking her 12th term in Congress by running in a new Florida district created after Republicans redrew the state's congressional map. The new district is majority non white, with a population that is 42 percent Black, 23 percent Hispanic, and 4 percent Asian. Wasserman Schultz is the only white candidate among five Democrats competing for the seat. She is currently the best funded candidate in the race.

Sheila Cherfilus McCormick and progressive organizer Elijah Manley have criticized the move, with Manley stating that Wasserman Schultz had other options and is attempting to take away Black representation. Wasserman Schultz has defended her run by arguing that her three decades of experience representing diverse communities in Broward County qualify her to serve the region regardless of lived experience.

An Associated Press analysis indicates that a win for Wasserman Schultz would be a rarity, as she is the only white Democrat positioned to represent a district with a Black majority or plurality. This political shift occurs as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis led an effort to cluster southeast Florida Democrats together to reduce the number of Democratic seats. While a center leaning source focuses on the tension between Wasserman Schultz and her rivals over Black representation, a left leaning source frames the situation as a broader challenge to the pro Israel Jewish establishment in South Florida by progressive rivals.
