Road Cave-in and Water Disruptions Hit Gurugram Following Heavy Rain

A section of the service road at IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram caved in on Tuesday afternoon, creating a 10 foot by 10 foot sinkhole. The collapse occurred on the Delhi Jaipur side of the road and was attributed by officials to the failure of a master sewer line. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stated that preliminary findings suggest a GMDA master sewer line running beneath the location leaked, causing soil erosion that led to the collapse. The NHAI has requested the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to perform urgent repairs to prevent hazards to nearby structures.

Traffic police and the NHAI barricaded the damaged stretch and closed two service lanes, diverting vehicles toward the Millennium City Centre Metro station via the Signature tower crossing. The incident followed heavy rainfall that caused widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion across the city. While flood waters had receded in most areas by Wednesday morning, the city continued to face civic challenges.

Simultaneously, water supplies were disrupted across several sectors, including sectors 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 56, 57, and 58 to 76. These disruptions were caused by damage to key water and sewage pipelines, including a leak near the Basai water treatment plant and further damage during excavation work near Baani Square. The GMDA stated that repairs to the sewer line at IFFCO Chowk would begin Wednesday morning.
