Romania Detains Russian Citizen Over Alleged Sabotage Operation

Romanian intelligence services have detained a 40 year old Russian citizen suspected of conducting a sabotage operation. The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) arrested the man, identified as Ivan Kucsenko, in Bucharest. Authorities allege that Kucsenko spent months photographing key military bases, communication centers, and defense institutions belonging to the Romanian army and NATO allies. The suspect reportedly monitored troop movements and logistics in several regions, including Cluj, Constanta, Calarasi, and Ilfov, as well as the Bucharest area. He specifically focused on Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft landing in Romania. Investigators state that the suspect communicated with an intermediary via encrypted messaging apps to receive instructions from Russian intelligence services. The Bucharest Court of Appeal has been asked to initiate a 30 day preliminary detention. The Russian embassy in Bucharest did not respond to requests for comment. This arrest occurs amid a broader trend of alleged Russian hybrid warfare across Europe. Recent reports cite failed or suspected sabotage attempts at a Leipzig airport, a weapons factory in Bulgaria, an ammunition plant in Italy, and drone facilities in Estonia and Slovakia. Poland and Germany have also reported numerous Russian linked sabotage attempts targeting military and industrial sites.
