The Romanian military destroyed two Russian made Gerbera type drones that were found drifting in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta announced on August 11 that the drones were first spotted by a civilian vessel working in the area. Following the discovery, a Romanian Coast Guard ship dispatched military divers who used controlled detonations to destroy the drones to ensure the safety of the waterway. Romanian authorities contacted Ukraine, and Ukrainian partners confirmed that the systems did not belong to them.
The Gerbera is a multipurpose Russian drone based on the Iranian Shahed 136 design. These drones are often used as decoys to exhaust air defense missiles, but they can also be used for reconnaissance, signal relay, and carrying small amounts of explosives. The Neptun Deep site is Romania's most significant offshore gas project and is expected to make the country the largest gas producer in the European Union by 2027.
This incident occurs amid a pattern of Russian drone incursions into Romanian territory since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Previous incidents include the scrambling of F 16 fighter jets and drone strikes that damaged buildings and forced evacuations in southeastern Romania. Analysts suggest these repeated incursions may be intended to test NATO reaction capabilities and Romania's defensive strategies.
