Romanian Prosecutors Indict Andrew and Tristan Tate for Trafficking Minors and Money Laundering

Romanian prosecutors have officially indicted social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan on charges including trafficking minors and money laundering. The indictment, issued by the Romanian anti organized crime prosecuting unit DIICOT, accuses Andrew Tate of trafficking minors, money laundering, sex with a minor, and witness tampering. Tristan Tate is indicted for complicity in these crimes. The brothers, who hold dual US and British citizenship, have been under investigation in Romania since December 2022.

Prosecutors allege that the Tates recruited victims by falsely promising romantic relationships or marriage. In one specific case, DIICOT states that Andrew Tate seduced a 15 year old girl in Britain in 2012 and moved her to Bucharest. The prosecution claims he used physical violence and mental intimidation to force her to produce pornographic content for a webcam business. Tristan Tate is alleged to have acted as an accessory by using physical aggression to coerce the victim and managing the financial aspects of the operation. Prosecutors estimate the brothers kept 1.25 million dollars from the victim's earnings, which represents roughly 80 percent of the total income. They allegedly attempted to launder these funds by purchasing four luxury cars valued at approximately 825,000 euros.

The Tate brothers are currently in jail in the United States while a judge decides on extradition requests from Britain, where they face rape charges. It remains unclear if Romanian authorities will seek their extradition from the US. While Romanian law allows for trials in absentia, the case must first be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber to ensure legality. A lawyer for the Tates, Eugen Vidineac, stated that his clients reject all allegations and will challenge any procedural or evidential deficiencies in court.
