Russia Intensifies Air Attacks on Kyiv and Across Ukraine

Russia has significantly intensified its aerial bombing campaign against Ukraine, with Kyiv experiencing a record high number of daily air raid alerts. According to BBC Verify analysis of government figures, sirens have sounded an average of 10 times a day since the end of August, with some residents seeking shelter up to 13 times daily. This surge is driven by Russia's use of newer, jet powered drones that fly up to 370 mph, making them harder to intercept than older propeller models. The Ukrainian Air Force reports that only about 60 percent of these drones are being shot down, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold emergency meetings to develop faster interceptor missiles.

The human toll of these attacks continues to mount. The psychological and social impact is evident in Kyiv's maternity wards, where women have given birth during active air raid alerts. Some expectant mothers have expressed reluctance to have children, citing security concerns and the risk of male children being conscripted into military service. While Russia claims its strikes target military objectives, Ukraine asserts that the campaign is designed to break civilian morale and pressure the government to cede territory.

These escalations follow a brief pause in attacks over the weekend during a visit to Kyiv by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who held talks regarding a potential end to the war.
