Russia Resumes Strikes on Kyiv as Germany Pledges Increased Air Defense Support

Russia launched a mass missile and drone attack on Kyiv on September 8, ending a brief truce and resulting in casualties. Reports on the toll vary, with one source citing at least three dead and sixteen injured, while another reports five dead and twenty nine injured. The strikes damaged residential buildings, a school, and warehouses. This escalation occurs as Russian forces continue their offensive in the Donbas, though Ukrainian officials claim Russia has repeatedly postponed its deadlines to capture the region, with a new target date potentially extending to March 31, 2027.

In response to the threat of winter attacks, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced extensive weapons deliveries during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Germany will provide PAC-2 interceptor missiles for the Patriot system and AIM-9 air to air missiles from Bundeswehr stocks. Germany also committed to continuing the delivery of IRIS-T air defense systems and supporting the City Dome project to protect cities from drones and missiles. Additionally, the United Kingdom pledged 100 million pounds for the rapid delivery of air defense missiles and the provision of 120,000 drones.

President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Germany for the support, stating that reducing the aggressor's ability to kill brings peace closer. He also noted that he is counting on a resumption of negotiations with Moscow and Washington. This diplomatic effort coincided with a visit to Kyiv by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
