Russian Aerial Attacks Kill 12 in Kyiv Region as Tactics Shift to Jet-Powered Drones

At least 12 people were killed and 21 others injured in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast on September 1 during a Russian ballistic missile and drone attack. Six of the deceased were Ukrainian Railways employees killed when a missile struck railway facilities. In the city of Brovary, four people died and 13 were injured, with eight of those casualties occurring in a damaged five story residential building. Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia launched 218 drones and various missiles, targeting Kyiv and Odesa oblasts. Ukrainian defenses intercepted 199 of these targets.

Russian forces have shifted their strategy toward using jet powered drones in near hourly attacks rather than massive overnight barrages. These drones travel at speeds up to 600 kilometers per hour, which is three times faster than Shahed drones. This tactic forces Ukraine to use more sophisticated defenses and reduces reaction time. Additionally, Russia has deployed the Banderol, a cheaper cruise missile with a smaller warhead that can be used more frequently to saturate defenses.

Beyond Ukraine, Estonia and Romania reported drone incursions on September 1. Estonia detected about a dozen drones near its border, one of which entered southeastern Estonia. Turkish fighter jets were scrambled as part of a NATO mission, though no casualties were reported. In Romania, a damaged drone containing explosives was found in a field and subsequently detonated by intelligence specialists. These incursions occurred while Ukrainian drones targeted Russia's Leningrad Oblast, damaging the port of Ust Luga.

President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the international community for being on vacation during the last two weeks and accused Russia of transforming children into war participants by attacking on the first day of school.
