Russian Air Strikes Kill 12 in Kyiv and Target Railway Infrastructure

Russian air attacks killed 12 people and injured many others in Kyiv and the surrounding region early Tuesday. The strikes marked the sixth consecutive day of intense attacks on the Ukrainian capital. According to officials, eight of the dead were in Kyiv, including several railway workers, while four others died in the town of Boryspil after a strike hit a residential building. One of the deceased in Boryspil was an Indian citizen.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russia targeted residential areas and railway infrastructure. A ballistic missile struck a locomotive depot, causing significant damage and killing six employees. Ukraine's state owned railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, described the network as the backbone of the economy and a vital lifeline for civilians. Reports indicate that Russia has increased its use of fast flying, jet powered drones that are harder to intercept. Ukraine's air force stated it downed five ballistic missiles during the overnight raids.

Beyond the capital, President Volodymyr Zelensky said strikes targeted a border crossing with Romania in the Odesa region, leaving thousands of families without electricity. Meanwhile, Ukraine has increased its own attacks on Russian territory, targeting oil refineries and logistics infrastructure. Russian officials reported a fire in the port area of Ust Luga and damage to facilities in the Samara region. One civilian was killed in Russia's Belgorod region. Estonia's defense forces also noted that Ukrainian drones briefly entered Estonian airspace.

While center and center right reports focused on the casualties and the strategic targeting of infrastructure, a center left report framed the attacks as a deliberate attempt to demoralize the population and disrupt daily life, specifically noting the timing occurred just before the start of the school year.
