A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw on Sunday morning. The attack occurred in the Volyn region, approximately two kilometers from the border with Poland. Ukrainian railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported that the train crew received advanced warning from monitoring teams, which prevented any injuries among the 206 passengers. The train eventually reached Poland with a delay of several hours.
In a separate incident, a drone hit a truck and a gas station near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, about 800 meters from the Polish frontier. The strike caused a fire that engulfed several parked cargo trucks. Polish border guards stated that the crossing briefly stopped working but resumed operations shortly after. The Polish military activated defense and reconnaissance systems and scrambled F-16 fighter jets, though officials confirmed that Polish airspace was not violated.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attacks as barbaric and stated that Putin's terror is knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO. President Volodymyr Zelensky added that the locomotive was deliberately burned. Russia's Defense Ministry stated that its forces targeted infrastructure used for military cargoes from Europe.
Other reports indicate that a separate special train carrying European officials, including former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was forced to evacuate or stop due to the drone alerts on the same route. Meanwhile, in Lithuania, Vilnius airport was briefly closed after a perceived drone sighting was later identified as a flock of birds.
These events occurred amid a broader wave of strikes. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones across the country, while Russia reported Ukrainian drone strikes on oil refineries in Tatarstan and Krasnodar, resulting in civilian casualties.
