A suspected Russian Shahed type drone violated the airspace of Moldova and Romania on September 8, causing emergency alerts and the scrambling of NATO fighter jets. The Moldovan military detected the drone at 4:20 p.m. local time entering from the direction of Ukraine. After leaving Moldovan airspace at 4:37 p.m. the drone entered Romania, where Spanish F/A-18 fighter jets were scrambled from Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base. Romanian authorities issued emergency warnings for residents to seek shelter and suspended operations at Iasi International Airport. Romanian radars lost contact with the drone after 17:00 local time, and the Romanian government reported that the aircraft ultimately crashed in Mihaileni Vechi, Moldova, about 25 kilometers east of the Romanian border. One report also noted a Russian drone attack hitting a border post between Ukraine and Moldova. These events follow a pattern of recent incursions, including a drone shot down by NATO jets on August 16 and a cruise missile that crashed in Moldova on August 17.
