A Russian military commander was shot twice near Engels in the Saratov Oblast on the morning of September 3, according to reports from Russian and European media. The attacker shot the officer before escaping on a motorbike. Russian Telegram channels and the British newspaper The Telegraph identified the victim as Maj. Gen. Nikolay Varpakhovich of the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division. While Russian state media reported that a military member was the target of an attempted murder, the state agency Tass did not name the general. Reports indicate Varpakhovich was hospitalized in critical condition, though some sources state his current health status is unknown.
The shooting occurred shortly after the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) linked Varpakhovich to a missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv on July 8, 2024. The SBU announced on August 31 that it had issued a notice of suspicion to Varpakhovich in absentia for ordering the attack, which was carried out by a Tu-95MS strategic bomber. The strike killed two adults and injured at least 34 people, including nine children, while more than 600 patients were in the facility. The European Union previously announced sanctions against Varpakhovich and other Russian officials in response to the bombing.
