A Russian missile struck a rural area in eastern Poland on Thursday, leaving a crater approximately 10 meters in diameter but causing no casualties. The incident occurred in the Lublin province near Tarnawa-Kolonia during a large scale Russian offensive against Ukraine that involved 74 missiles and 284 drones. This broader attack resulted in at least eight deaths within Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the projectile was likely a Kh-101 cruise missile, though he noted that officials are working to be completely certain of its type and origin. In response to the breach, Poland and NATO activated air and ground defenses. Polish F-16 fighter jets were deployed but lost track of the object before it impacted the ground.
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen condemned the violation of Polish airspace. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga argued that the event demonstrates an urgent need to reinforce Ukraine's air defense systems to ensure European security. Meanwhile, Russia claimed its strikes in Ukraine were directed at military industry, telecommunications, and logistics centers.
