Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on Sunday, August 16, 2026, resulting in at least one death and several injuries. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that ballistic missiles sparked fires in at least two districts, including non residential buildings in Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi. President Zelenskyy stated that Flamingo cruise missiles hit a rocket and space factory in Samara and a military airfield in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The Samara facility is reportedly used to produce rockets for the Rassvet broadband network, a Russian alternative to Starlink.
Diplomatic tensions rose as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a letter to Vladimir Putin reaffirming his support for Russia's war effort. Meanwhile, Russia requested explanations from Washington and Ankara regarding reports that US weapons held in Turkey might be transferred to Kyiv.
