Alexander Kondratov, the 52 year old production designer of the TV series Likvidatsiya, has been arrested by Russian authorities on charges of treason. The Meshchansky District Court in Moscow ordered him to be held in a pretrial detention center, and the Moscow City Court subsequently rejected an appeal against his arrest.
Kondratov, who was born and raised in Moscow, has lived in Kyiv since 2012, where his family remains. He traveled to Russia to renew his international passport and was detained at Vnukovo Airport on May 5. According to TASS, he was initially given 15 days of administrative arrest for petty hooliganism. Reports from Mediazona and Memorial indicate that he was subjected to a series of repeated administrative arrests, spending a total of more than 70 days in detention before the treason case was opened on August 5.
Defense attorney Natalia Tikhonova stated that investigators based the treason charges on at least six of Kondratov's online publications, though the specific content of those posts was not disclosed. Kondratov is an award winning designer who received the Golden Eagle and TEFI awards for his work on Likvidatsiya, a series about criminal investigators in 1946 Odesa. He also worked on the series Odessa Mama and Return My Love.
