Indonesian authorities have launched a search and rescue operation after losing contact with a passenger ship carrying between 240 and 243 people in the Java Sea. The vessel, identified as the Virgo Transport 8, was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan province. The ship departed Surabaya on Saturday at 10:13 a.m. local time and stopped transmitting its location early Sunday morning.
According to the national search and rescue agency, Basarnas, the ship encountered bad weather before communication failed. The last known position of the vessel was approximately 148 kilometers, or 80 nautical miles, from a pier in Banjarmasin. Rescue teams have deployed personnel and the vessel KN SAR Laksmana 241 to the area. An operations post has been established at Trisakti.
