Security forces in Senegal and Mauritania intercepted more than 750 people attempting irregular crossings to Europe within a few days. The Senegalese Navy reported intercepting 210 people on Saturday, some of whom had serious health problems, and another 246 people on Thursday. Additionally, the Mauritanian Coast Guard rescued 315 people on Wednesday from a wooden boat that had departed from Gambia; infants were among those rescued. These migrants were attempting to reach the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain. The route is approximately 1,500 kilometers from Senegal and is considered life threatening, with numerous deaths occurring annually. According to United Nations data, irregular arrivals on the Canary Islands have decreased significantly following a record in 2024. By mid July, approximately 4,400 people arrived, representing a decline of about 60 percent compared to the same period last year. This trend is attributed to stricter controls and agreements between the EU, Spain, and countries in North and West Africa.
