At least seven people died after a five storey building used as paying guest accommodation for students collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of South Delhi on Sunday afternoon. Rescue operations involving the NDRF, SDRF, and other agencies continued into Monday to search for survivors, with some reports estimating that 30 to 35 students remained trapped under the rubble. AIIMS Delhi has identified five of the deceased, including several students from Delhi University. The court observed that responsibility for the collapse extends beyond the property owner to include university authorities and the MCD, stating that the tragedy could have been avoided if authorities had fulfilled their statutory duties. In response, the MCD suspended five officials, including the South Zone Deputy Commissioner. The Delhi government has also ordered the immediate sealing of illegal structures with four or more floors and issued vacation notices to several buildings near the collapse site due to dangerous conditions.

Legal and political repercussions followed the event. The owner of the building, along with his wife and son, was arrested. The Cockroach Janta Party issued seven demands, including an independent criminal investigation into a suspected PG mafia and the construction of more government hostels. Meanwhile, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar defended the civic body's record, noting that hundreds of demolitions and sealings had been carried out in recent months as part of a crackdown on unauthorized construction.
